  SCR-194 / BC-222

is an American backpack, developed for the artillery.

  • It dates from the 1930s.
  • It is generally considered to be the first true US Army portable
       transceiver.
  • It contains two tubes
  • It used plug in coils
  • Because it was intended for use by the Artillery, it had
  • Earphones (HS-22) and a separate
  • Microphone (T-24).
    The battery strapped to the bottom of the set, and a telescoping antenna screwed into the top cover. The radio and battery fit into a custom made canvas bag.
  • (BG-71) which was worn on the soldier's back.

  • The Infantry was supplied a version, SCR-195/BC-322. It covered 52-66 MHz in one band.
