PS 31
is a portable radio built by TESLA (Czechoslovakia), that was used (also?) in the GDR.
It uses simplex mode and has 70 channels in the 80 MHz- band. It is meant for connections to fixed and mobile stations and
between PS 31.
The complete radio set is called PS-31, the radio alone is called PR-31.
In the GDR ist was used by the Stasi.
The PS 31 in the collection uses a key switch. There also were PS 31 with a simple on- switch (then the key could
not get lost).
As special feature the PS 31 has a built in and switchable speech encoding, also
a transmitted code to specify the activity at the given moment and a code "emergency".
At the beginning of each transmission an identification code is automatically transmitted. During the transmission
a single or uninterupted signal tone can be added.
The radio is carried in a thick leather bag on the left side of the body. The operational elements are on the upper and the front side.
On the upper side:
Plug for the speakermike,
Display of the code,
Keyboard to enter the code,
Key switch (unique)
Loudness
Antenna connector
On the front side:
Two channel switches , between them the channel number,
Mode switch. Usable modes:
* economical usage without speech encoding,
* economical usage with speech encoding,
* usage with speech encoding,
* usage without speech encoding, squelch deactivated.
The speakermike has the following operational elements and displays:
* PTT- switch;
* Red key "emergency".
* Red luminescent diode that shows the battery condition.
Two antennas are part of the station:
* Miniflex antenna PA 31 (220 mm long) and
* Steel spring wire antenna PA 32 (750 mm long) to cover greater distances.
