FM Radios of WWII by Alan Tasker, WA1NYR Around 1940, a frequency allocation plan was implemented that carried through WWII and into the next generation of equipment after that. This plan was as follows. Armour, 20-27.9 MHz Artillery, 27-38.9 MHz (c1950, Infantry was officially assigned 38-55 MHz). A low power series of transceivers (i.e. both Rx and Tx in one box), sometimes called "Jeep radios," were developed, and a high power series of transmitters with companion receivers were also developed (sometimes called "Tank" sets). Later, the BC-1000 came along for the infantry (SCR-300) and for use in tanks and other vehicles (AN/VRC-3). Low Power Series (1-1.5 Watt Tx power output) The BC-620 ![]() BC-659 ![]() Later, the SCR-619/BC-1335 ![]() High Power Series (20 Watts Tx power output) The following hardware was developed for high power capability in order to increase the communication range. BC-603 receiver, 20-27.9 MHz BC-604 transmitter, 20-27.9 MHz BC-683 receiver, 27-38.9 MHz BC-684 transmitter, 27-38.9 MHz This equipment was supplied different ways as follows. SCR-508, two ea BC-603 Rx plus one ea BC-604 Tx plus BC-605 interphone SCR-528, one ea BC-603 Rx plus one ea BC-604 Tx plus BC-605 interphone SCR-538, one ea BC-603 Rx plus one ea BC-604 Tx plus one ea BC-605 interphone SCR-608, two ea BC-683 Rx plus one ea BC-684 Tx plus BC-605 interphone SCR-628, one ea BC-683 Rx plus one ea BC-684 Tx plus BC-605 interphone Representative of this series is the BC-603 and the BC-604 shown below.
