  PRM 4790A or Syncal 2000

is a portable RF radio, built by RACAL ©.
It has the modes LSB, USB, AM and CW, has a robust aluminum housing and is scheduled for extreme climatic conditions.

It is a modular radio, used (with additional equipment) as:

  • Manpack with 20W HF output.
This set consists of the radio, the 12V- nicad- battery, handset collapsible antenna; installed on a carrying frame.

  • Low power mobile station with 20W HF output, connected to 12V.
The transceiver is connected to the 12V Power of the vehicle by the Vehicle Supply Connector ST91716 The built in ATU is used to match the RF of the radio to the mobile HF whip antenna.

  • Low power mobile station with 20W HF output, connected to 24V.
The transceiver is connected to the 24V power of the vehicle by the Vehicle Supply Connector MA4794. This interface converts the 24V of the vehicle to 12V, needed by the transceiver. The internal ATU can be used, or an external ATU BCC540G, and the mobile whip antenna.

  • High power moblie station wuth 100W RF, connected to 24V.
The transceiver is connected to the power amplifier/interface unit TA4793. The interface converts the vehicle's 24V to 12V for the transceiver, and provides 100W HF power. The ATU BCC540G and the mobile whip antenna are used.

  • Staitc base station.
Any of the obove described stations can be used as Static base station. Used as a 20W- station, with internal ATU, a power supply of abt. 7A at 12V is needed. Used with an external interface and ATU a powers upply of 24V at 17A is needed. The vertical whip antenna or an tuned dipole can be used.

    The back- lit LCD- display
    shows all operational informations:

  • 6- digit display of the frequency, the nearest 100 Hz are displayed,
  • Channel number,
  • Result of the self test,
  • HI / M / Lo display of the HF output (HI only when the des TA4793 is connected),
  • Relative bar graph level of reception and relative HF output while transmitting,
  • "PROG RX" or "PROG TX" at programming,
  • Left or right arrow shows the rotating direction of the SEARCH control.

The arrow also shows whether the frequency at this moment is above or below a multiple of 100Hz.
(While transmitting, no arrow is shown, since the frequency is an exact multiple of 100Hz. While receiving, no arrow is shown, if thr frequency is an exact multiple of 100Hz.

The Racal Syncal radio is (to me) the only known green portable HF radio with VFO. Because of that it is an ideal HAM radio.

The Search Control has a variable tuning capacity.. If you turn the control twice as fast, the frequency changes 4 times as fast.

    Frequency range:
