  AN/PRC-112

is a SAR- Radio, successor to the PRC-90.
It is used since 1986.

The old SAR- Radios (abt. 1 million specimen on UHF and VHF) had a simple beacon- funktion without ID possibility. Whe tzhey went off, it was almost impossible to find out if the signal meant an emergency or not. Besided that the listening to analogue SAR- radio- signals was switched off from Feb. 1 1999 on.
In case of distress, pilotes can be located with the help of the
"AN/ARS-6 Pilot Locating System";
A programmed "Surviver ID Code" is used. The Locating System can selectively locate and aim a special AN/PRC-112.

Before the flight, a Program Loader (KY-913 Programmer) writes a surviver ID code and the two programmable channels A and B into the radio..

An unencryped voice communication can be established on 282,2 MHz or the two additionally programmed channels; the beacon- channels are encrypted.

Seven channels can be used. :

* 121,5 MHz beacon;
* 121,5 MHz AM unencrypted;
* 282,8 MHz AM unencrypted;
* Programmable channel A;
* Programmable channel B;
* 243 MHz unencrypted;
* 243 MHz beacon.

The radio is used for:

* Radio;
* Transponder, enabling distance measuring and personal identifikation ;
* Beacon with air-to-ground-funktions;
* Using the AN/ARS-6 Pilot Locating System, the exact location of the operator is determined.

DME (Distance measuring equipment) is used. This is a transponder- based radio navigation, that detemines the slope- distance to the radio, using teh propagation delay of VHF- or UHF- signals.

On the upper side
are earphone contacts and the channel/mode- switch.
Beacon- channels only can be selected by pressing the channel switch.

The front side
contains the on/off/loudness- switch;
the name plate,
and the " DME- Indikator". The indicator blinks eight times when receiver ID is adressed sucessfully by the locating system;
and the loudspeaker/microphone.

On the lower side
are located battery contacts and the contacts for the program loader KY-913.
